Birth: Dec. 20, 1837, Worcestershire, England
Death: Jul. 27, 1893, Coseley, Stafford, England
William Bowen (1800-1874), who served as a minister to Cradleys Unitarian congregation for 22 years, and who married Marianne Priestley, a grand-daughter of the famous Joseph Priestley, is buried with his wife, in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
As to a 1841 census for Cradley, Netherend, England, Thomas 'Aubrey' was living at Chapel House, with his parents and two siblings, William and Lindsey.
After serving at Cradley, William Bowen left Cradley in 1850 for Kingswood Chapel, and a few years later emigrated to Australia. The Bowen family built a home in Studley Park, the Melbourne suburb of Kew and named it 'Cradley'; and that house gave its name to the present-day 'Cradley Avenue' in that suburb.
Thomas Aubrey married Jane Miller, fourth daughter of Henry 'Money' Miller and Eliza Mattinson, on March 8, 1870. He became a renowned opthalmic surgeon, and is remembered in the Aubrey Bowen Wing of the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Morrison Place, East Melbourne, which is listed by the National Trust.
