DR. WILLIAM CARTER JR.; PSYCHIATRIST, NEUROLOGIST

Dr. William S. Carter Jr., 71, formerly of Abington, a retired department chairman at Abington Memorial Hospital, died Aug. 1 at his home in Winter Park, Fla.

Dr. Carter was the director of Abington Memorial Hospital's Mental Health Center from 1953 until he retired in 1983 .

He chaired the hospital's Department of Psychiatry from 1965 until he retired.

He was born in Philadelphia and graduated in 1939 from the college preparatory Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa., which is located near Wilkes- Barre.

He received his bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University in 1943.

And he earned a degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1947.

From 1948 until 1950, he was a Navy lieutenant junior grade attached to the psychiatry department at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital.

He also served at a Navy medical facility in Pensacola, Fla.

After his military duty, Dr. Carter was on psychiatric duty at Pennsylvania Hospital until 1953.

He had been a resident of Abington for about 30 years.

Dr. Carter practiced psychiatry and neurology in Abington for 30 years until a heart attack forced him to retire in 1983.

His wife of 32 years, Anne Baldwin Carter, died in 1980.

After moving to Florida in 1987, Dr. Carter spent many hours doing watercolor painting and serving as docent for the Morse Museum of Art in Winter Park.

Dr. Carter is survived by his wife of 13 years, Hettie Smith Carter; two daughters, Corinne Carter Greene and Cynthia Carter DeFelice; two sons, Dr. William S. 3d and Ashton B.; a brother, and eight grandchildren.

A private memorial service was held last Sunday in Winter Park.

Burial was private.
