Doctor of Medicine and celebrated physician, founder of the Gesellschaft Museum (museum society) in Bremen. Was a follower of Mesmer's 'magnetic' method of treament.
From http://www.hypnose-kikh.de/museum_en/saal5.htm#a: In Germany, the “Animal Magnetism” movement was probably not as well publicised by Mesmer as it was by the Zurich pastor J.C. Lavater (1741-1801). Lavater came across the idea of magnetism in Geneva in 1785 and successfully used it to treat his wife, who suffered from rheumatism, migraine attacks and stomach ailments. He travelled to Bremen in 1786 and there his ‘Magnetism’ attracted the attention of two doctors: Arnold Wienholt, the city physician of Bremen, and H.W.M. Olbers. Olbers successfully treated a young girl using Lavater’s instructions. Both doctors then began to treat patients using the ‘magnetic’ method. Wienholt collected his cases in a three-book work, the third being published posthumously.
