"Walter Hasenclever est le plus en vue. Né le 8 juillet 1890 à Aix la Chapelle où il fréquente le lycée de l'empereur Guillaume, il étudie aux universités d'Oxford, Lausanne, Leipzig, Bonn. Bientôt il délaisse le droit et ne s'intéresse plus qu'à la littérature, la philosophie, l'histoire. Il se lie d'amitié avec Kurt Pinthus, Ernst Rowohlt, Franz Werfel, Kurt Wolff. Il publie en 1910 "Städte, Nächte und Menschen", en 1916 "der Sohn". A Dresde il fait la connaissance d'Oscar Kokoschka. Souvent à Berlin, il fait des tournées de conférences dans toute l'Allemagne. Dès 1924, il est correspondant du journal berlinois "8 Uhr Abendblatt" à Paris où il se lie avec le peintre Jean Lurçat, avec Jean Giraudoux et Kurt Tucholsky. En 1925 il écrit un drame, "Mord", puis des comédies : "Ein besserer Herr", "Ehen werden im Himmel geschlossen". Il réside à nouveau à Berlin puis part pour le Maroc, ensuite à Hollywood et revient à Cagnes-sur-Mer. Giraudoux obtient son élargissement du camp d'Antibes dès septembre 1939. Il écrira après sa libération "die Rechtlosen" ("les sans-droit") où on reconnait certains de ses meilleurs amis : "Golo" est son grand ami, l'artiste peintre Henry Gowa ; "Goldman" est Werner Goldschmidt, historien d'art, fin et cultivé, installé comme antiquaire à Nice où il réside dans une magnifique villa ; "Melitz" est Werner Rings, d1Offenbach, bel homme, ancien journaliste des Brigades internationales qui va se réfugier en Suisse où il fera une carrière journalistique importante ; "Raschke" est le poète David Luschnat, marié à une historienne et résidant à Tourrettes-sur-Loup (Alpes-Maritimes) ; "Ritter" est le Dr Wengraf, psychanaliste d'origine autrichienne ; "Thomas" est Heinz Wurm, propriétaire de l'édition "die Schimiede" (la forge) à Berlin, souvent mélancolique, qui mourra à Marseille avant son départ prévu pour les Etats-Unis. Les intellectuels sont légion à Antibes, citons parmi eux : ..."
