von Oppolzer was 1899 associate professor at the German University in Prague , 1901 eo and 1906 ordinary professor in Innsbruck . He produced a highly acclaimed theory of the emergence of sunspots and conducted investigations of refraction and work in photometry and physiological optics . He discovered (1901) the variations in the brightness of småplaneten Eros .
