About Earl William Dungey

GEDCOM Note

AzaniaDungee We do know how the Dungeys relate. We all descend from Frances Dungey (b. 1709), a white indentured servant of a man named John Douglass, in Brunswick, VA. She had children with a man who was either African or Native or a mixture of both which was quite common. Her Master was a trader with the Algonquin (Powhatan) Tribes so we think the man was Native and possibly worked in the nearby “Indiantown” called Fort Christiana. At any rate, she had about six “mulatto” children who were all free by the 1750s. Some lines married free blacks, some servant class whites, and one (mine) continued to marry Powhatan people of the Pamunkey tribe where they resided on the Reservation. You can read some of this history and some photos on FreeAfricamAmericans.com and learn more about the white Dungeys who moved out West in the court case of William “Black Bill” Dungey of Illinois (find in a google search). We have a huge reunion in Virginia each August.
