Was injured on the 1943 Mareth Line, Tunisia when German airplane spra yed a Bren Gun Carrier he was driving with bullets. The officer Dere k Anthony Seagrim who was a passenger was killed and awarded a Victori a Cross. After his wounds healed he continued his service in North Africa doin g the postal run between Cairo and Alexandria until 1945. Earnest was confined to a wheelchair after 1945 as the bullet they cou ld not remove, moved and damaged his spine.
