Eddie Barnard (1972 - 2006)

Brief overview:

Eddie (34), his wife Rina, and nine month old daughter, Carli, were ambushed outside their house on 18th November 2006.

Pistona Matebula (27), a Mozambican who is part of hijacking syndicate, and three other members, took the Barnard family to Tokoza where Eddie was pulled out of his Toyota Fortuner four-wheel drive and shot. He passed away later in Natalspriut Hospital.

Eddie's Fortuner was presumably intended for "export" to Mozambique where a client of the syndicate bought it after it's believed to have been “ordered".

  • Matebula, who apparently has a South African Passport, as well as several aliases, will appear in court in Witbank on 22 January 2007 on a charge of carjacking.
  • Matebula, was arrested for, amongst other things, the murder of a lawyer from Vanderbijlpark, and may soon be charged with three more murders. A pistol was found on him and sent to Pretoria for ballistics tests to determine whether it might also have been used in other crimes.
  • Capt. Manie van Zyl of the Mpumalanga police's unit against serious and violent crimes in Middelburg, confirmed yesterday that Matebula will soon be charged with at least three murders become He is also connected with two hijackings in Witbank.
  • The hijacking syndicate has lead a reign of terror in Mpumalanga, Witbank, Germiston and Vanderbijlpark, including several murders and rapes, in addition to the hijackings. Two of Matebula's syndicate accomplices were shot dead south of Johannesburg in November when they were involved in a hijacking.
