December 16, 1982: Interview with Edith Delean (from Sharon Reifer Gallant)
This is an interview with my great-grandmother, Edith Eastlund Delean.
Q. What was a typical day like for you?
A. I went hiking with friends and did a lot of other outdoor things.
Q. What was a school day like?
A. I would have to walk five miles to school and five miles back from school and then do my chores and homework.
Q. When did you start working? How much was the salary?
A. I started working when I was 17 at a store. I received $15 for a week of work which bought the things I needed.
Q. What types of discipline where used at home and at school?
A. At school, I remember the principal hitting our hands with a board if we talked. At home, my mother didn't let me go out to play if I was in trouble.
Q. What were meals like?
A. We usually had a dinner with meat and other courses.
Q. What kind of entertainment did you have?
A. We did a lot of outdoor things such as tobagganing, ice-skating in the winter, and, in the summer, hiking and picking berries.
Q. What did you do in your spare time?
A. Played with other kids who lived in the town.
Q. What did you want to be when you grew older? What did the other kids want to become?
A. I wanted to be a singer or a nurse but neither came true because I got married. I really don't remember what the other kids wanted to be.
Q. What did you want from school?
A. I wanted an education.
Q. What family activities were common?
A. Going on hikes, berry-picking, and sometimes going to a relative's house.
