Edith Vortrefflich left Vienna, Austria in 1939, one semester short of her university graduation. Moving with her mother to Durham, NC, she used her mathematics training to get a job as an actuary in a local insurance company. Within a year, she moved to Greensboro, NC, where she joined Gate City Life Insurance company. After marrying Harry Sloan and giving birth to two boys, she was a stay-at-home housewife until her youngest son went to college. At that occasion she went back to school to finish a BA and MA in mathematics and to begin a career of teaching mathematics at the Univ. of NC at Greensboro.
