About Edmond Wood Hampton

Edmond Hampton was born in Lawrence County, Alabama July 7, 1824, the son of Miles and Rhoda Ann (Bodray) Hampton. He was the oldest of thirteen children I have found documentation for; however, his obituary states he was the oldest of nineteen. He married Eliza George in 1849 in Alabama. They had five children: John Edmond, Matilda Ann, Monroe Mitchell, Martha and Eliza.

Edmond moved his family along with several brothers and sisters, to Big Creek in Taney County Missouri around 1856, and is listed among the first settlers of the area. Big Creek was described as a beautiful creek that ran through the hills and hollows of Taney and Ozark counties of Missouri, with fertile creek bottom land surrounding it. It was described as a land of hunters who seemed to regard it unwise to labor hard on a farm when there existed such inducements to kill game. Deer, bear and panther were frequently seen.
The Bauff Post Office and trading center was established on Big Creek near the present Ozark-Taney County line on November 15, 1858. It served as an early road junction point connecting Rockbridge, county seat of Ozark County; Forsyth, county seat of Taney county; and Yellville, county seat of Marion County, Arkansas. Edmond G.W. Hampton served as Bauff’s first postmaster from 15 November 1858 through 21 April 1861.
Edmond’s wife Eliza, died in early 1860 leaving him with their five children listed in the August 1st 1860 census, ranging in age from 4 months to 7 years old and 2 of Edmond’s brothers that were ages 10 and 13. By October of 1860 he had married his neighbor John Taber’s 20 year old daughter Patience. Their first child Isaac Miles was born in 1861.
Edmond left Patience and the eight children now ages 2 through 15 to join Union Company E, 6th Regiment of the Missouri Cavalry on the 15th of July 1862. He was mustered out July 20, 1865 from expiration of service at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Edmond returned to Bauff after the Civil War. His son Isaac Miles died in 1866. Edmond and Patience had five more children, all born at Big Creek: Abraham Lincoln, Charles Lewis, Celia Francis, Amanda Lucinda Diana, and David Lucian.
Edmond served as postmaster at Bauff again from July 19, 1867 through February 7, 1868; and May 7, 1875 until his death, at age 55, July 22, 1879. He also served as associate judge of the eastern district of Taney County from 1878 through his death.
A land patent for 160 acres of land in Section 26, Township 22 N, Range 17 W of Taney County was issued to Edmond G.W. Hampton by President Ulysses S. Grant on 1 April 1875.
The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) post #480 at Protem, Missouri was named in honor of Edmond Green Wood Hampton. He was a member of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge #453. He is buried at the Rhodes Cemetery on the banks of Big Creek with a military stone marking his grave. Patience died in February 1908, and is buried beside him. Her grave is marked by a rock with her name, date of death, age 6 (I assume the 7 for age 67 has worn off) scratched into it.
