About Edward Carr Vipond
From New Zealand Herald 4 August 1921.
Mr E.C. Vipond
The death occurred at Matakana at the weekend of an old settler in the person of Mr Edward Carr Vipond, formerly of Kaipara Flats. The late Mr Vipond, who was 74 years of age, arrived in New Zealand by the 'Caduceus' in March, 1871. He was at the Thames goldfields until 1875, and during this period saved three lives by carrying three men up a ladder from the Caledonia mine, where they had been overcome by gas. For this he was presented with a locket, a ring, and a scarf pin made from gold from the mine. Mr Vipond removed to Kaipara Flats in 1875, and remained there until 1919, when he removed to Matakana, where he remained until his death.
