About Edward Franklin Cox, Sr.

According to the State of Utah Death Certificate for Edward F. Cox, he died from broncho-pneumonia and old age at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 17 days old on April 22, 1922, and was born December 5, 1832. He was the son of Daniel and Mary Ann Frampton Cox of Maryland. He was buried in the Lehi Cemetery in Lehi, Utah, on April 25, 1922. The informant on his death certificate was his second wife, Annie Hughes Cox of Lehi, Utah.

According to a Millennium File record found on Ancestry.com, Edward Franklin Cox was born December 5, 1835, and died April 22, 1922, and was married on March 13, 1856, to Hannah Ashton, and their children were Alice Hannah, Ida Elizabeth, Edward Franklin Cox, Jr., and Daniel Cox.

A Family Data Collection Individual Record from Ancestry.com shows that Edward Franklin Cox, son of Daniel William Cox and Mary Ann Franpton, was born in Walkerville, Green County, Illinois, on October 5, 1836, and that he married Hannah Ashton on March 13, 1856, and died April 22, 1922, in Lehi, Utah. So there appears to be several different birth dates for Edward. Sadly, his mother, Mary Ann, passed away when Edward was only 10.

In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Utah Territory, Edward Cox, 17, was living with his father, a step-mother (who was only 2 years older than Edward) and siblings who were listed as follows in the record: Daniel, 50, Lucy, 19, Edward, 17, Jacob, 14, Joseph, 10, and Azubah D., the 5-month old daughter of Lucy and Daniel, and Edward's half-sister. Daniel was working as a farmer and his personal estate was valued at $50. He was born in Maryland, Lucy in Tennessee, and the children in Illinois except for Azubah, who was born in Deseret. Since Daniel's first wife, Mary Ann Frampton Cox, passed away in June of 1845, in Illinois, Daniel must have married Lucy Maria Smith, not long after his first wife's death. Lucy was born June 11, 1831, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, to Howard S. Smith and Azubah M. Smith.

Edward probably married Hannah Ashton on Utah about 1857, since Hannah was listed with her maiden name in the 1856 Utah State Census Record. Hannah was the daughter of Richard Ashton and Alice Higginbotham and she was born to them in Cheshire, England, on February 23, 1840. Not long after Edward and Hannah married, Edward's father, Daniel William Cox, passed away on July 27, 1858, in Lehi, Utah.

By the 1860 census for Lehi, Utah, Edward and Hannah had two young children, and were listed in the census as follows: Edward, 26, Hannah, 19, Edward F., Jr., 2, and Hannah Alice, 11 months old. Edward was working as a farmer. Living next door was Edward's step-mother, Lucy A., Cox, 28, with her children, Azubah, 9, Charlotte, 8, Lucy E., 5, and Daniel H., 3 months old. Since her husband had passed away two years earlier, Lucy was working as a seamstress to support herself and her family. Her real estate was valued at $650 and her personal estate at $400. Here it states Lucy was born in Pennsylvania, and not Tennessee as shown in the 1850 census. Lucy later married William Dawson, and she passed away July 11, 1890, in Lehi, Utah.

By the 1870 census for Lehi, Utah, Edward and his family were listed as follows: Edward, 35, Hannah, 32, Edward, Jr., 12, Hannah, 10, Mary, 4, and Rosa, one year old. Edward was farming and his real estate was valued at $400 and his personal estate at $200. This census record shows that Edward was born in Illinois, his wife, Hannah, in England, and their children in Utah. Sadly, another son named Daniel for Edward's father had been born in 1861 but he passed away the following year in 1862. Another son, Joseph Richard , was born and died in 1862, and yet another son, James Thomas, was born in 1873 and died in 1875.

By the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Lehi, Utah, Edward was listed with his family as follows: Edward F., 45, Hannah, 40, Edward F., Jr., 22, Alice Hannah, 20, Mary J., 13, Rosie, 11, William Ashton, 9, and Ida Elizabeth, 4 years old. Edward was working as a farmer and his son, Edward F., Jr., was also working on the farm. Eleven year old Rosie was at home and nine year old William was attending school. This census record shows that Edward Sr. was born in Utah, his father in Missouri and his mother in Canada, and that Hannah was born in Iowa and her mother in Maryland. All of their children were born in Utah. Another daughter, Maud, was born in 1881.

Then, sadly, Edward's wife, Hannah, passed away 13 years later on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1894, in Lehi, Utah. She was buried in the Lehi Cemetery. Hannah was only 54 years old when she passed away. Five years later on August 10, 1899, Edward F. Cox, 65 years old, applied for a license to marry Annie Hughes, 41 years old. Annie Hughes had come to America from England the previous year in 1898. She was the daughter of David Hughes and Eliza Austin, both of England.

Edward was was still living in Lehi in 1900 and was listed in the census with his second wife and youngest daughter as follows: Edward F., 66, Annie, 48, and Maud, 18. According to this census record, Annie had never given birth to any children. Edward was still working as a farmer.

In 1910 Edward, 78, and Annie, 58, were living in their home on Lake Road in Lehi, and Edward was still farming. He may have been working on his brother, Jacob's farm, since Edward was listed as an employee in the census record, and Jacob, 74, living two doors down, had his own farm. Jacob and his wife, Elizabeth, 69, had been married for 50 years. Living with them was their 16 year old grandson, Jacob G.

Then in 1920 for some reason, the census showed Jacob Cox was 88 and Elizabeth, 84, Edward as 87 and Annie as 68....some of their ages were slightly off, based upon their ages in the 1910 census, and even at these advanced ages, Jacob and Edward were still listed as farmers!

Two years later on April 22, 1922, Edward passed away at the age of 89 years old from pneumonia and was buried in the Lehi City Cemetery with his first wife, Hannah. His second wife, Annie Hughes Cox, passed away 10 years later on February 9, 1932, and was also buried in the Lehi City Cemetery next to Edward and Hannah. At the time of her death she was 81 years old, having been born May 18, 1850. Her death certificate showed that she died from hypostatic pneumonia and myocarditis.
