About Edward P. Reardon

Edward P. Reardon died Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in Worcester.

Born in Worcester in 1926, the son of James F. and Ruth (Powers) Reardon, he was a lifelong resident of the city. After graduating from South High School in 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy United States Navy and became a non-commissioned officer in the Shore Patrol. Stationed in New York City at the end of the Second World War, his duties included guarding German and Italian POWs as they entered the United States for processing in Manhattan. After the Navy, he returned to Worcester, graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in 1950 with a B.A. in History. He received a law degree from Boston University in 1955 and married Marie Kenary that summer.

He practiced law in Worcester for more than 50 years, retiring in 1999. He founded the Massachusetts Police Association Legal Defense Fund and was honored by the MPA in 1996 for a career defending police in civil and criminal matters.

He enjoyed spending time with his family at the home he built in Watch Hill, Rhode Island and loved day and weekend car trips to locations all over New England. He was a loyal alumnus and supporter of Holy Cross and often attended Crusader football games at Fitton Field. He particularly enjoyed his visits to Ireland in the 1980s and 1990s. There - as well as here - the company of, and conversation with, all kinds of people were a great joy to him. He always came down on the side of generosity.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters: Anne and her husband, Douglas French, of Worcester; and Ellen and her husband, Kirk Hartman, of Pacific Palisades, California; a son, Edward of New York City; a sister, Ruth R. and her husband, Dr. Thomas O'Brien, of Brookline; as well as five grandchildren: William and Laura French, and Harriet, Regina and Julie Hartman. His brother, James G. Reardon, died in 1999.

The funeral Mass is today at 11:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., followed by a private burial at St. John's Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church or to the New England Center for Children, 33 Turnpike Road, Southborough, Massachusetts 01772.

The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., is directing arrangements.
