The esteem in which the local community held Dr. Edward Phifer is shown by this exerpt from the Morganton News Herald, April 1939:
"Business came to a standstill as a final ribute. Stores closed for the funeral as did public offices, the Morganton city schools recessed at noon, and the hosiery mill of which Dr. Phifer was president halted at mid-day."
Dr. Phifer had just returned home from calls at the hospital and homes when he was stricken.
He was a son of George Loundes Phifer and Martha Matilda Avery.
