About Pvt Edward Reeves, Sr
Edward Reeves came into Bladen County, North Caroline before 1750 and moved around a lot before settling down to become a planter and stock raiser when he aquired land there. One record says he came from England. He continued to buy land in the area until he owned 1400 acres. Most of the plots were later given to his sons. He did not marry until he was 46 years old and, his wife, Jane Melvin, was much younger than he. The couple had fourteen children, the youngest born when Edward was 74 years old. (Dates in the family records show he may have been born in 1720)
No Revolutionary War records have been discovered for this family. In 1776 Edward was 55 and his oldest son was 7. Edward is said to have apposed slavery and never owned any slaves.
He lived to be 105 years old. All of his children attained long lives as well. He is buried with his wife, Jane, son Evan, daughter, Damaris, her husband, Tolliver Sutton, his second wife, Maria Peterson Sutton. In 1926 Gaston P. Sutton identified the grave site and erected monuments and a "strong iron fence." The approximate location can be ascertained from the land records for the plot owned by Edward and then his son, Evan Reeves, in Bladen County, North Carolina.
