About Edward J Reinders

Edward J. Reinders, 80, of Orange City passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City.

There will be a family prayer service at 10 am. Tuesday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Edward John was born Dec. 9, 1923, in Orange City, the only child of Gerrit J. and Neeltje "Nell" (Levering) Reinders. He received most of his elementary education at the Orange City Christian School and graduated from Orange City Public High School in 1942.

He then attended Northwestern College in Orange City until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in February of 1943. He served as a hospital corpsman in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he returned to Orange City, where he owned and operated the Standard Oil Station.

On June 20, 1947, Ed married Marjorie Lois Oolman at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he became an active member. The couple made their home in Orange City, where he was involved in the grocery business and later was the bookkeeper for a veterinary clinic.

He retired from the Orange City Street Department in 1989.

Mr. Reinders suffered a stroke in July of 1989. Since January of 1999, he had been a resident of the Orange City Municipal Hospital Long Term Care Facility.

Ed spent his life as a faithful and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a long-time member of the Orange City Volunteer Fire Department, the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, United Commercial Travelers and the "Medicare Nine". He enjoyed playing baseball and softball, fishing, spectator sports and being with friends, playing snooker and card games or just visiting.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marge; a daughter. Mary Reinders; two sons and their wives, Philip and Lee Reinders and David and Julie Reinders, all of Orange City; three grandchildren, Kristen, Adam and Jordan Reinders; two aunts, Irene Netten of Orange City and Gladys Gerritsen of Spencer, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Charlotte Huitink, Eunice and her husband, Clarence Huitink and Pearl Oolman, all of Orange -City; nephews and nieces, extended family; and many dear and faithful friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Philip Jay, in 1949; and three brothers-in-law, Harold Oolman, Myron Oolman and Henry G. Huitink.
