About Edward de Bury

Following the Norman Conquest, Bury was granted to Roger de Montbegon who also held the extensive manor of Tottington to the north-west. The barony had been granted to Roger de Poitou, although it had passed back to the king by 1086 and remained in the hands of the crown for the next 300 years (SCC, 27.06.07). The resident of the manor, Ailward de Bury married into the de Montbegon family and his son, Adam, subsequently leased the demesne lands in 1193-4 for a knight’s fee (Ashworth 2002; Giffords 2000, 1). In 1319 the manor passed to Henry de Bury who died without issue, the estate then passing to his sister, Alice. Alice later married Sir Roger de Pilkington and their son, also Roger, inherited the two manors.
