Efroyim? Fischl? לא ידוע

This is a putative (product of an educated guess), rather than a historic (known from documents) individual. It is presumed that this individual's male and female children would have borne the Hebrew patronymic ben or bat Fischl.' Following the 3rd partition of Poland, in Krakow and hence the ghetto suburb of Kasimir (Kuzme in Yiddish), Jews were required by the Habsburg empire to adopt surnames. The Polish translation of the patronymic ben Fischl would have been Fiszlewicz,which would have been spelled in the German fashion by Austro-Hungarian clerks, Fischlowitz. A hybrid spelling would have been Fischlowicz.

As Hebrew-Yiddish compound names were very common, Fischl, or little fish, the symbol of the sons of Ephraim, was probably a Yiddish nickname appended to the full name of Efroyim-Fischl, which is still a frequent compound given name in Israel and elsewhere.
