Elias Hohimer was the son of Elizabeth Sidebottom (1784-1878) and William Henry Hohimer (1758-1823). His mother was born in Kentucky and died in Indiana. His father was born and died in Kentucky.

From "History of Menard and Mason Counties, Illinois", published in 1879 by O. L. Baskin & Co., Chicago, IL. Sandridge District: "Elias Hohimer, Reason Shipley, Jacob Short and his sons Obediah, James and Harrison, were added to the settlement during 1824. Hohimer and Shipley were from the "dark and bloody ground," and became permanent settlers of this section from the time of their first arrival."

During the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848), Elias served in the U.S. Army as a Private in Company F, 4th Illinois Infantry. Sarah Short, his future wife's, first husband, David Rice Short, was also assigned to Company F, 4th Illinois Infantry.

He married Sarah Short (1808-1874) on September 26, 1848 in Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois. Children: • Mary Ellen (1849-1926) • Anna Eliza (1852-1939) •

After Sarah (Short) Hohimer died, he then married Eliza Jane Pantier (1853-1935) on January 27, 1876 in Menard County, Illinois. Children: • Cynthia 'Cytha' Marie (1877-1966) • Grace F. (1879-1897) • Le Roy (1881-1949) • Marion Henry (1884-1971) • William Francis, Sr. (1883-1945)

After Elias Hohimer died, Eliza Jane (Pantier) Hohimer (1853-1935) married John Henry Gooden (1842-1913) in 1902 in Menard County, Illinois. No children.
