Elias P. Mays

Elias P. Mays was born about 1810, and died after the time of the 1880 Census. His parents were Abraham and Eleanor Oakley Mayes of Maury County TN. His grandparents were Henry and Phoebe Harrell Mayes of Henry County VA and James and Janet or Jennett MacKinney Oakley.

Elias married Mary Darden Gardner, daughter of Brittain and Emily Millicent Darden, on 17 JUL 1836, in Maury County TN.

Elias and Mary had at least 9 children including: Buford Lafayette Mays who married Martha Harriet Pinkard, Martha E. Mays who married Frank M. Kitchen; Sarah E. Mays who married Andrew M. Prowell; Francis Augustus "Gusta" Mays who married first Mollie M. Roundtree, and second widow Phebe Emaline Duty Darden; Alabama Mays who married Robert Jarrett or Jarratt; Bourben Mays who married James S. Hastings; Augustus B. Mayes who married Myra Blackburn; Elias Jesse who married Miss B. Loftin; and Alfred Zib Mays who married Mary Golden "Goldie" Climer.

The children are shown in the 1850 and 1860 Census records for E. P. Mayes, in Maury County TN.

Although Elias' wife Mary was buried at Goshen Cemetery, in Maury County TN, there is no grave stone for him there.

Some researchers report that Elias married second Nancy Jane Perry of Dyer County TN. However, the relevant marriage certificate is not clear on this point.

Note that Augustus B. Mayes and his wife Myra Blackburn appear to be the same couple as Abrim and Elmira Mays shown in the 1880 Census for Maury County TN.
