   PLEASANT GARDEN PARTY
The garden party held at the residence of Mr. Elijah Binkley, Millgrove, last Thursday afternoon was a grand success, both financially and in point of attendance. There were over three hundred present. Loma's Brass Band, from Hamilton, arrived early and played a number of pieces on the ball grounds during the afternoon to the satisfaction of all. The ball match between a picked nine of the Bullock's Corners and the Flamborough clubs against the Millgrove club was very exciting, and resulted in favor of the visitors by one run. In the evening the tables were well bountifully spread and ample justice was done by the crowd. At night the grounds were illuminated with Chinese lanterns, etc. A good program was presented under the presidency of Mr. Robt. Flatt. The speech by Rev. David Hunt, the playing of the band, the singing of the Carey family and the recitations were all first-class. The proceedings lasted until 10 o'clock, when the people dispersed for their homes well satisfied with their afternoon's and evening's enjoyment.

   A GAY OLD DECEIVER
ELIJAH BINKLEY, A SEPTUAGENARIAN, SUED FOR BREACH OF PROMISE
If what Miss Margaret White, of Dundas, says is true, Elijah Binkley, the patriarch of West Flamborough, is a naughty old man, and he has grievously trifled with a young maid's best affections in a manner that is anything but a good example to the rising generation. 'Lije is about 70 years of age, a widower, with half a dozen married sons and daughters and a procession of grandchildren. He belongs to the well known and widely diffused family of Binkley, whose names are to be found on the books of nearly every polling sub-division of the County. A writ has been issued against the old gentleman by Carscallen & Cahill, solicitors for Miss Margaret White, a maiden of thirty-five summers ( but who doesn't look it ), for that the said Binkley did promised to marry the girl and failed to keep said promise, whereby he has blighted her young life to the extent $5,000 and costs. It is alleged that Binkley courted Miss White for some months, and proposed marriage. He was accepted, but he failed to claim the prize which the matrimonial lottery has slung in his direction.
Miss White waited a respectable time, and then had her lawyers send a gentle reminder to Mr. Binkley requesting him to come to time. This brought a letter from the defendant, in which he pathetically gives a physical inventory of himself, and ends up by remarking that he is 69 years of age, weighs 119 pounds, and hopes they won't put him to the cost of a suit, because he is innocent. The writ was issued on Oct. 18, and the suit promises to be rich in interesting and spicy details, and there is said to be more than appears on the surface.
I have not been able to find anymore of the "spicy details" :-)
   The Homestead:
Elijah built a handsome brick house on Con. 4, Lot # 16 South, West Flamborough Twp. before 1875. At that time the property included a sawmill and a brickyard where the bricks for the house (and many other buildings in the area) were made. The house is still standing. It has a newer two-storey front porch with pillars that make it look elegant and more modern then it is. It is also deeper then the original.
