About Elijah Thomas Buck

Jonathan and Zuriah start out in Providence Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in 1783. In 1791 they migrated down to Carter County, Tennessee. They are in New River Three Forks Settlement, Wilkes County, North Carolina and listed as members of the Three Forks Baptist Church in 1799. I haven’t been able to find them in the 1800 census. I did find several BUCKs in the 1815 census for Ashe County, North Carolina… but I don’t know if they are our BUCKs… Henry Jackson’s birthplace is often listed as North Carolina, but it has been listed as Tennessee as well. Zuriah died in 1819, and is probably buried at Sinking River Baptist church, but we don’t know for sure. Jonathan went on West to Jackson County and then died in White County in 1831. His grave is marked.

Elijah bought land on the waters of Sinking Creek, Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee in 1815. In the 1830 and 1840 census’ Elijah and Nancy Ann are found living in Morgan County, Tennessee, and in the 1850 census, they are in Hilham, Overton County, Tennessee. Elijah died (presumably) in 1853 and is probably buried in the cemetery that was on his property in Allardt, Morgan (now Fentress) County. We’ve recently discovered a stone with the initials “LB” carved on it in the cemetery which was overgrown and used for cattle grazing in recent years. Evidently, you wouldn’t recognize it as a cemetery. I suspect that Elijah, Nancy Ann, and several other BUCKs and related people are buried there, but without records, it is impossible to say. There may be some old Baptist church records somewhere, but so far we have nothing other than the suspicion.

Henry Jackson migrated to Illinois in 1864 and his wife Martha Richardson died in 1865, presumably in Illinois, but neither one of their burial places has ever been recorded though we know the dates of their deaths! I find that amazing. I would think that someone in the family knew when and where these people were buried, but those people now are also gone.
