Civil War: Company D, 8th California Infantry Elisha Brooks was the son of George Washington Brooks (1812, OH-1898, CA) and Eliza Ann Scholfield (1816, CT-1859, CA). He made the long trek to California with his parents in 1852. He was the twin brother of Elijah Brooks and fellow veteran Justus Brooks. Elisha Brooks enlisted as a private at San Pablo, California, November 15, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 8th California Infantry, November 30. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant January 1, 1865. Lieutenant Brooks was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco October 24, 1865 (Orton, 807-08). After the war he resided for many years in San Francisco, where he married Ellen Worth (1844-Dec. 27, 1932, CA) on April 20, 1869. He was a member of Thomas Post, No. 2, San Francisco, California, in 1886. He was also a member of the Society of California Volunteers, a Union veteran's organization. He was living at 1725 Sutter Street, San Francisco, in 1893. Elisha filed for a Civil War veteran's pension July 5, 1904, and received application No. 1,320,048 and certificate No. 1,089,465. He re-filed for his veteran's pension May 6, 1907. After his death in 1930, his wife Ellen filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Ben Lomond June 17, 1930, and received application No. 1,670,282 and certificate No. A11-3-30, later XC2-633-037.
