About Elisha Cobb Rich
The "Commerce," Solomon H. Lombard master, returned from a mackerel fishing trip and anchored off Truro in good weather. The next day, the townfolk became concerned at not seeing their neighbors ashore, and boarded the vessel. No one was aboard, and the boat was missing. The boat was soon found, with some damage, and over 3 weeks the 10 seamen were fouind drowned, from Provincetown to Barnstable. "How a crew of ten active men, many, if not all, expert swimmers, could all be drowned in smooth water, so near the shore, probably having the usual complement of oars, thwarts, etc. -- how the leak occurred, and why it could not have been stopped, with many other queries, will ever remain a mystery." Solomon H. Lombard, master, 30 James H. Lombard, a brother, 25 Reuben Pierce, 39 Solomon P. Rich, 36 Charles W. Rich, his son, 12 Elisha Rich, 16 John L. Rich, 13 Thomas Mayo, 23 Ezra Turner, 20 Sewell Worcester, 30, of Wellfleet
