About Eliza Irene Chaffee
From Wikipedia
In about 1829 Sanford's father moved his family to Fort McHenry, Maryland, to take up the post of an army sutler. As a consequence, 4 of Sanford's sisters met and married military men: Charlotte married General James Barnes, Henrietta married Major John B. Clark, Mary married Colonel Henry Bainbridge and Irene married army surgeon Dr John Emerson. The 5th sister, Virginia, who was the youngest, married stove manufacturer Samuel H. Ransom of Albany. Sanford’s brother, naval captain Joseph P. Sanford, married Ransom's sister Lydia, and between tours of service, worked for stove manufacturer Rathbone in Albany.
From Dred Scott - Historic Missourians
In 1843, Dr. Emerson died suddenly. Though neither Dred Scott, famous slave nor Harriet Scott appeared in Dr. Emerson's will, Irene Emerson considered them her property. Mrs. Emerson moved in with her proslavery father, Alexander Sanford, on his plantation near St. Louis. Her brother, John F.A. Sanford, a successful businessman, handled many of her affairs. For the next three years, Dred and Harriet Scott worked for other people while Mrs. Emerson collected their wages. ....
.... Mrs. Emerson left St. Louis, moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, and married Dr. Calvin Clifford Chaffee, an antislavery congressman. Dr. Chaffee was unaware that his new wife owned slaves and that she was resisting their plea for freedom. ...
Dred and Harriet Scott did not give up. With the continued help of new lawyers, the Blow family, and other supporters, Dred Scott's case moved through the Missouri courts to the highest court in the nation. At this point, John Sanford, who lived in New York, claimed ownership of the Scotts. The Scott's new lawyer, Roswell Field, appealed the decision and added Scott's daughters to the case. Eventually, Field arranged for the case to go before the U.S. Supreme Court. He convinced Montgomery Blair to argue for the Scotts in what became the famous Dred Scott v. Sanford case.
Shortly after Judge Taney's verdict, John Sanford died, and Dr. and Mrs. Chaffee transferred ownership of Scott and his family to Taylor Blow in St. Louis. Dr. Chaffee was eager to free his wife's slaves because he believed that slavery was wrong. Mrs. Chaffee, however, would only transfer ownership if she could collect the wages that had been held by the sheriff for the past eight years. The total amounted to about $750.
- The Scott vs. Sanford case was an antecedent to the Civil War. Here is a site that discusses this case and the impact on the Civil War. Essays: A Hard Shove for a "Nation on the Brink": The Impact of Dred Scott. In this essay, by Lisa Cozzens, it states that Dred Scott, the slave, was left to her brother, John F. A. Sanford by his sister, Mrs. John Emerson. A must read!

Daughter of Alexander SANFORD/(Mary ADAMS - maybe not)
The wife of Dr John Emerson, the original owner of Dred Scott. She, his widow, is the "Emerson" in Scott vs Emerson proceedings which later turned into the Supreme Court Scott vs Sandford (mis-spelled by a clerk and never corrected - the Sanford referred to is her brother, John F.A. Sanford) known as the abominable and historically embarrassing "Dred Scott decision".
