Born in the hamlet of Apperley, Deerhurst Parish to Martha Newman and John Crook. She was their second child.

Eliza married Joseph Halford at St Catherine Church, Gloucestershire on 9 June 1831. They were parents of five children; the last son, Joseph Henry Halford, being born just a day before his father's death and a year and one half before his mother died at Nauvoo.
