About Eliza Sophia Johnson
Eliza's parents, Peder Andreas hartvigsen and Tharaldine Pernille Nielsdatter, immigrated from Norway in the beginning og 1860's. They first came to Nebraska and then traveled til Salt Lake via covered wagon pulled by 4 oxen. Hyrum, Cache County, Utah became their permanent resident where they owned a ranch in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Her father also operated a saw mill. Eliza was intelligent even though she received very little education. As a young woman, Eliza fell in lowe with her first cousin, Edwin Norman. Her parent did not approve of their relationship because Edwin was half English and they were blood relatives. When Paul Andreas Johnson, a full Norwegian arrived in Hyrum, they saw an opportunity to maintain the Norwegian blood lines and apparently insisted that Eliza married Paul. The marriage took place in the Logan LDS Temple February 20th, 1988. Eliza never forgot her first love as she named her third son Edwin and her forth son Norman. Norman died at age 3, September 5th, 1910. Eliza, in addition to raising a family of eleven under very basic conditions, worked as a midwife and nurse. it is hard so say how many Avon, Hyrum and Paradise babies drew their first breath aided by a good slap by Eliza. After Paul died in 1935, Eliza continued to live in the two story Victorian house that she and Paul finished in 1911, in time for the birth of the last twins, Edith and Leonard. The home had finished kitchen but the bathroom remained an outhouse down the path for as long as she reisided there. Eliza spent the last few years of her life in Logan, Utah. She died May 15th, 1949. She was buried in the Hyrum, Utah Cemetary.( Turid Kjeldseth Hasle by curtesy of her grandson, LeRoy Johnsen).
