About Elizabeth Duke
November 18, 1780: "From Deed Book J, page 88 of the records of Louisa County, the following is taken: 'Betty Duke expresses the belief it is wrong to keep negroes in slavery. She therefore frees certain slaves, here recorded. John G. Duke and John Hawkins state that the slaves set free by Mrs. Betty Duke are due to them at her death by the will of her husband Cosby Duke, dec'd, but that she has purchased their right in the said slaves from them. They were accordingly freed' (Henry Duke Councilor His Descendants and Connections; page 205)
