As per 'The Family of Early: Which Settled Upon the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Its Connection with Other Families,' by Ruth Hairston Early (1920), p. 189; "In 1853 John Early purchased from John Crouse and wife a tract of land leading from the Lynchburg and Salem turnpike to Jones' mill: at this time he and his wife deeded to the citizens of Lynchburg a portion of this tract for a suitable cemetery: an association was formed with Rev. John Early as president, and in June 1856 the reservation christened Spring Hill cemetery was formally dedicated."
