About Elizabeth A Lane

Both of Elizabeth's parents were born in Virginia. On the record of the marriage of her daughter, Clara, Elizabeth's maiden name was given as Jarvis. On the record of the marriage of her daughter, Minnie, her maiden name was given as Jones.

Elizabeth married James Franklin Lane (14 Apr 1839 - 21 Apr 1922) about 1867 as his second wife. He was born in Ohio to Rev. Samuel Taylor Lane (1815-1895) and his second wife, Lydia Ann (Schoonover) Lane (1817-1850).

In the 1850 U.S. Census, James may have been living in Pleasant, Hardin County, Ohio, with his maternal grandparents. It appears the name says Joseph T. Lane (born c.1839); however, the age matches James rather than his younger brother Joseph (born c.1842).

James had [1st] married Nancy (Long) Lane (born c.1838) on 4 Apr 1860 in Seneca County, Ohio. Nancy was the daughter of Anthony Long (1805-c.1871) and his first wife, Catherine (Ritter) Long (1813-1843).

In the 1860 U.S. Census, James and Nancy were living in Scipio Township, Seneca County Ohio, with her father and his second wife, Jane (Ingle) Long (born c.1818). Anthony and Jane moved to Vermilion County, Illinois, and they were living there in the 1870 U.S. Census.

James served as a Corporal in Co. K, 164th Ohio Infantry (National Guard), U.S. Army, during the Civil War.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, James and Elizabeth were living in Washington, Polk County, Iowa, and he was as "farmer."

In the 1880 U.S. Census, James and Elizabeth were living in Sherman, Hardin County, Iowa, and James was a "R.R. laborer."

In the 1900 U.S. Census, James and Elizabeth were living in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, and he was a "janitor." Elizabeth was the mother of 5 children and 4 were alive in 1900. They had their granddaughter, Wellie M. Barner (born Apr 1886), living with them in 1900.

James [3rd] married Melissa Almira (Feely) Johnson Lane (born Aug 1837) on 25 Dec 1906 in Lee County, Iowa. She was born in Ohio to John J. Feely and Martha Jane (Daugherty) Feely.

In the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Censuses, James and Melissa were living in Polk County, Iowa, and he was a "house carpenter" (1910). They had Melissa's granddaughter, Vallie Johnson (born c.1899), living with them in 1910. _____

3) Minnie M. (Lane) Smith (born July 1875) was born in Iowa. She married Henry L. Smith (born c.1871) on 30 Dec 1899 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Henry was born in Jackson County, Iowa, to R. Smith and Mary (Limler) Smith. In the 1910 U.S. Census, Henry and Minnie were living in Van Meter, Dallas County, Iowa. In the 1920 U.S. Census, they were living in Polk County, Iowa.
