About Elizabeth Mary Lewis
Horry, Mary Elizabeth Alicia Elizabeth Little (born Laroche) Born: WFT Est 1719-1760 Died: WFT Est 1782-1846 Mary E. Horry Lewis Prince Jordan and Stringfellow in "A Place Called St. John's" (p. 41-42) state: "The abandoned island (referring to Kiawah) was deeded to a Captain George Raynor in March 1699. According to an entry in the official colonial records, he had arrived in Charles Town in 1692 as master of a ship, the Royal Jamaica, which he claimed to have taken as a "lawful" prize from Frenchmen under conditions of war. Yet it appears from other testimony that Royal Jamaica was stolen from British subjects of Jamaica -- a nortorious haven of pirates to be sure -- and that Raynor was a sometime associate of the infamous Captain Kidd." (Here they cite Shirley Hughson, Carolin Pirates and Colonial Commerce Johns Hopkins, 1894) I have not checked that reference. 2) You may also find reference to it on (p. 123) First Settlers of South Carolina 1670-1700 by Agnes Leland Baldwin (Southern Historical Press, 1985)The ship was the LOYAL Jamaica. Raynor, who was previously a crew member on board the Mary of Jamaica captained by George Auston around 1690-91 was later captain of the Bachelors Delight a Dutch Caravel and subsequently of the Loyal Jamaica when he took the ship with a crew and passengers to Charleston. Raynor, who was a lawfully commissioned privateer, lived in Jamaica but he and others chose to relocate to the mainland of Carolina. They arrived April 1692 and pulled into harbor at Mount Pleasant. The authorities of Charleston, fearing they were pirates told them to leave the area. The ship pulled out of Mount Pleasant but was found later to have run aground at Sewee Bay and the passengers and crew had scattered within the vicinity. Captain George Raynor settled in the area and was a wealthy merchant seaman and planter of Carolina.
