About Elizabeth Richmond alias Webb

Not the same as wife of John Richmond and not the wife of John Richmond, of Taunton

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nicholas-120

Elizabeth Nicholas was the daughter of Richard Nicholas.[1][2]. She was the first wife of John Richmond alias Webb (1590 - 1641). Elizabeth Philipps was his 2nd wife.

Children of Elizabeth Nichols and John Richmond alias Webb:

  1. Edward Richmond alias Webb (Edward Webb), born Wiltshire, about 1612, died about 1645
  2. Katherine Richmond alias Webb (Katherine Webb) born Rodbourne Cheney, Wiltshire, England, 23 Mar 1614, died about 1634
  3. John Richmond alias Webb (John Webb) born about 1615, died before 1634.

Primary source documentation on Elizabeth Nicholas is almost non-existent.

Her identity as the first wife of John Richmond alias Webb (d. 1641) is is given in an indenture of 10 April [1634] made by Oliver Webbe alias Richmond in which he names "Edward Richmond alias Webbe, son and heir apparent of John Richmond alias Webbe, esq., brother of the said Oliver, and of Elizabeth Nicholas, his former wife ..."[3][4]

She is presumed the "Elizabeth Nicholls" married "John Webb" at St Gregory by St Paul, London, 27 Jan 1611,[5] however, why a Wiltshire couple would marry at London is not explained.

Various researchers working on her parentage/ancestry, based on what seems secondary information and reasoned conjecture thought at one point she was the daughter of Rev Robert Nicholas and Jane St John of Cannings, Wiltshire about 1590.[6] It appears that Burke's Peerage recognizes only one child (Katherine) of perhaps seven children born to this couple.[7] Additionally, the "Visitations" cited here explicitly list her as both daughter of Richard Nicholas and wife of John Richmond alias Webb of Rodbourne-Cheney.

Elizabeth Nicholas' death date is unproven. The "Visitation of Wiltshire" cited here[1] showed that John Richmond was in Ireland in 1633 and showed him married to Elizabeth Nicholas. However, by that time he may have already met and married his second wife, Elizabeth Philipps (widow of Edmond Medhop who died in Ireland in 1621). In any case she was dead by 10 Apr 1634 when John's brother Oliver described her as John's "former wife" in court testimony.[3]

Some researchers wonder if a burial of 10 May 1627 at St Mary's, Devizes, Wiltshire may be hers. However, there were 1619 and 1622 christenings of Elizabeth Web (all entries spelled Web, all on findmypast.co.uk) so it seems more likely that the 1627 burial was for one of these young women.

Some researchers have suggested she may have first married a John Henbury of East Orchard based upon entries in the Visitation of 1623 however this cannot be proven.

John Richmond's will and estate records cannot be used to confirm the marriage as his second wife was also named Elizabeth _____, sometimes called Elizabeth Phillips of Pembrokeshire, Wales. (By this time, he is using the surname Webb and their children are known as Webb.)

Research Notes

1611 marriage. Marriage index cites FHL microfilm 375,028. These records have been digitized and appear available as restricted records (2021), see the FamilySearch catalog entry, "Parish registers of St. Gregory by St. Paul's Church, 1559-1853" (FHL film 375028, DGS 8048115).

Jane St. John? Removed Jane St John (Saint_John-59) as mother. She married Robert Nicholas, not Richard Nicholas and had a daughter Katherine but there is currently no sourcing for a daughter Elizabeth.[Note: this was probably the correct parentage and could be restored now that she is disconnected from the wrong husband.]

For the Robert Nicholas-Jane Sr. John family, see See Henry Saint-George (Sir), The visitation of Wiltshire 1623 (London : G. Bell & Sons, 1882), 41; digital images, InternetArchive.

Not the Wife of John Richmond Immigrant of Massachusetts. See Fortunatus Familia - Nicholas, Reverand Robert. Please read this source very carefully. It has an Elizabeth Nicholas as a daughter of Robert Nicholas and Jane St. John. This Elizabeth Nicholas married a John Richmond alias Webb (1594-1641) who died and is buried at Wiltshire, England. While the site is thoroughly researched, "options" are presented; eg. children may be cousins, may belong to a different generation, etc.

The Richmond Family, states that the wife of John Richmond (1594-1664), immigrant to America, buried at Taunton, Massachusetts, is unknown:[8]
