Elizabeth was the second wife of Jacob Troxel.
NOTE: DAR application files list Elizabeth (no surname) as Jacob Troxel’s second wife.
The only documented name of any spouse of Jacob Troxel is “Elizabeth” without a maiden name -- she is identified as such when she applied for a widow’s pension in 1843, stating she lived in DeKalb County, Alabama.[1]
Some online trees have claimed that she was the Elizabeth Blevins who married first Christian Steele. There was such a marriage,[2] but there is no evidence that this same Elizabeth later married Jacob Troxel.[3]
This Wikitree profile appears to represent Elizabeth Blevins of this theory, although as of Nov 2018, it is not attached to a spouse.
Jacob and Elizabeth likely married by 1830 as the oldest female in Jacob’s household is too young to have mothered his known children.[4]
In February 1843, T.W. Newman made inquiry on Elizabeth’s behalf seeking her widow’s pension. The attempt was unsuccessful because she could not prove she had been married to Jacob.[5]
Given this timing, she is probably the Elizabeth Troxell, 56, born North Carolina, in DeKalb Co., Alabama in the 1850 US Census.[6] Her age in this census (56) -- if indeed this is Jacob’s widow -- suggests that a) she was born about 1794, and therefore, b) she was not his first wife, nor mother of his children (born between 1780-1796). If Elizabeth Troxel in the 1850 census was the widow of 1843 seeking her husband's pension, she was probably not the Elizabeth Blevins who married first Christian Steele in 1808, as she would have been only 14 years of age. Not impossible, but unlikely.
