MEMORIAL PHOTOS 0 FLOWERS 0 Betsey Mangum Veazey was my great grandmother. My grandmother was one of her daughters (Mary Emma Veazey Teasley). The children she had that carried the surname of Mangum (which was her maiden name) were fathered by Ben Ellis. From the oral history I have discovered this was not a secret in the community. Ben Ellis also fathered other children with other women who were married or later married others. He also had a family of his own. Elijah Veazey (Betsey Mangum’s husband and my great grandfather) raised the children she had when they married as his own although they always knew Ben Ellis was their father. From what I have been told, this was not an uncommon happening during the Civil War years.

ELIZABETH -BETSY*2 MANGUM (JESSE1) was born Abt. 1842 in Orange Co, NC*. She married (2) ELIJAH

VEASEY* November 21, 1870 in Orange County, NC5*, son of EZEKIEL VEAZEY and FRANCES. He was bom

Abt 1820".

Notes for ELIZABETH •BETSY" MANGUM:

According to the late Mildred Mangum Harris, Betsy Mangum had 3 illegitimate children before she married Elijah Veasey. It is believed by some family members that Ben Ellis fathered these 3 children.

History of Betsy Mangum

1850 Betsy was in the household of her father Jesse Mangum, She was 8 years old and attended school.

1860 Betsy was in the household of her brother William Wesley Mangum. Her age was given as 22. Her mother

Mary was in the same household and so was Betsy's brother John.

1870 Betsy (Elizabeth) was in the household of Elijah Veazey who was 50 and a farmer. She was 35 and keeping house. 10 year old Guthrie was not listed with the family Adolphus was shown as 6 years old (should be 8) and Charies as 4 (should be 3). Edward was newest son and was 6 months old. All children's names were given as "Veazey," although only Edward was most likely a Veasey.

1880 dwelling #160, family #174 Elijah Veazey, 50, farmer, his wife Elizabeth, 58, sons Charley, 13, Edward F , 10, Percy, 2, and daughters Ancflza, 8, Mary 4.

An Orange County, NC, marriage license was issued to Elijah Veazey, son of Ezekiel and Frances Veazey, and to Elizabeth Mangum, daughter of Jesse and Polly Mangum, November 19, 1869. Elijah and Elizabeth were married at the residence of Ehjah Veazey by A. Mangum, J.P. [Justice of the Peace], November 21, 1870. I question this last date. Were they married in 1869 or 1870? Elizabeth was already Veaseys wife in the 1870 census, and their son Edward was 6 months old My guess is that they married in late November 1869, and the J.P. didnt fill out the certificate until the new year, recording the wrong year.
