  • SIR THOMAS WENTWORTH', succeeded as 2nd Baronet, K.G., M.P. for Yorks. I Chas. I. 1625, High Sheriff co. York in 1626, created Baron Wentworth of Wentworth-Wood-house by patent, dated 22 July 1628, and Viscount Wentworth 10 Dec. following, he was shortly afterwards sworn of the Privy Council, made Lord Lieutenant of Yorkshire and President of the North, 12 Jan. 1629. In Feb. 1632 he was nominated Lord Deputy of Ireland, from which post he was recalled to command as Lieut.-General in the army then raised against the Scots. He was created by patent, 12 Jan. 1639, Baron and Earl of Strafford, Baron of Newmarch and Oversley by descent, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1640. He was born in Chancery Lane in the house of his grandfathers Atkins, then a barrister of Lincolns Inn, on Good Friday, 13 April, bap. at St. Dunstan's in the West 22 April 1593, and beheaded 12 May 1641, bd. at Wentworth. mar. LADY MARGARET CLIFFORD (1st wife), dau. of Francis, 4th Earl of Cumberland, mar. 22 Oct. 1611, and d. s. p., buried 21 Sept. 1622 in St. Olane's church, York. mar. LADY ARABELLA HOLLES (2d wife), dau. of John, Earl of Clare, mar. 24 Feb. 1624-5, died 5 Oct. 1631. mar. ELIZABETH (3rd wife), dau. of Sir Godfrey Rodes, knight, of Great Houghton, co. York, mar. Oct. 1632, and d. at Hooton Roberts 9 April 1688.

  • Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford (13 April 1593 (O.S.) – 12 May 1641) was an English statesman and a major figure in the period leading up to the English Civil War. He served in Parliament and was a supporter of King Charles I. From 1632 to 1639 he instituted a harsh rule as Lord Deputy of Ireland. Recalled to England, he became a leading advisor to the king, attempting to strengthen the royal position against Parliament. When Parliament condemned him to death, Charles signed the death warrant and Wentworth was executed.

  • He was born in London, the son of Sir William Wentworth, of Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, a member of an old Yorkshire family, and of Ally, daughter of Sir Robert Atkins of Stowell, Gloucestershire. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge,[1] became a law student at the Inner Temple in 1607, and in 1611 was knighted and married Margaret, daughter of Francis Clifford, 4th Earl of Cumberland.
