About Elizabeth Williamson Means

Birth: (1) Only d/o Col. John MEANS/Ann WILLIAMSON. 1799. SC.

Marriage to Dr. William M. VORIS: (1) 27 Apr 1827.

Marriage to Dyer BURGESS: (1) 31 Aug 1842. At the home of her brother Hugh MEANS, the former residence of her father in Adams Co., OH, about 3 miles from Manchester.

Death: (1) 28 Feb 1889. In her 90th year. Marietta, OH.

(1) 1819: Came to OH when her father came to free his slaves.

(1) 1827: Rev. Dyer BURGESS formed an attachment to Elizabeth MEANS, but his suit was discouraged by her brothers and family, and she married Dr. William M. VORIS. The event was entirely unexpected by Mr. BURGESS and struck him like a bolt of lightning. At a communion service the Sunday following, he preached from the text, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols," and he preached with such pathos and depth of feeling that his hearers could not but believe that his idol had been shattered when Miss MEANS married Dr. VORIS.

(1) 1835, Jun: When the news of her husband Dr. VORIS's death at Cincinnati was brought to her, she was so overwhelmed with grief that she sat as one dumb for 6 weeks. With her two girls, she returned to the home of her father, Col. John MEANS, on the Maysville Turnpike, just west of Bentonville, where she resided during her widowhood.

(1) 1842: After he marriage to Rev. Dyer BURGESS, they removed to Washington Co., and for 27 years they lived at Warren, 6 miles from Marietta.

(1) 1872: After her husband Rev. BURGESS's death, she spent the remaining 17 years of her life in Marietta, OH, with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. P. CUTLER
