Elizabeth Campbell and Mary Campbell were both daughters of Sir James Campbell, the 3rd Baron of Auchinbreck. They are in is his 1752 will as "Mary Woods" and "Elizabeth Woods" along with a third sister who married a Stuart who also emigrated. At least 6 of the Baron's children emigrated--with good reason. The Baron was imprisoned in Dunbarton Castle in 1745 after backing "Bonnie Prince Charlie" in the failed effort to regain the throne for the Stuarts. The only reason he didn't forfeit his head along with his freedom and baronial seat and lands at INVERARAY,in Argyllshire, was because of his great age and the probability that his mind had begun to go with age.

The parents of Magdalena Woods, wife of John McDowell of Rockbridge County, VA, are usually given as Michael Marion Woods and Mary Catherine Campbell, generally without attempt to cite primary sources. I have found one claim to the contrary, however, summarized at the Find a Grave entry linked below.

The owner of that Find a Grave profile, Sue McDuffie, quotes another researcher, Deb Redmon, claiming to have seen documentation which satisfied her that Magdalena Woods McDowell's parents were actually Samuel Woods, brother to Michael Marion Woods, and Elizabeth Campbell, sister to Mary Catherine Campbell. While no specific citation of the relevant records appears in that notice, I will provisionally accept this version of events on the basis that it at least demonstrated a need for skepticism and proper documentation. Further pursuit of this line of inquiry is beyond the scope of my current purpose in outlining the remote connection between this family and several autosomal DNA donors whom I match, presumably through the extended family of John Campbell and Grace Hay, both b. ~1680 in Ireland.
