Elizabeth de la Montagne

   Ide or Eide Montanje, son of Abram Delamontanie and Rebecca Van Huyse, was probably named for his great-grandfather, Ide Van Huyse, who never left Holland. Ide Montanje also had an uncle Ide Van Huyse who probably served as godfather, although there is no record of baptisms in Harlem from that period. Ide was one of the executors of his father's will, which suggests he might have been one of the older sons. On the Peapack Patent of New Jersey, Ide was called Eide or Eda by his Dutch and German neighbors and Edward by his English neighbors.

   Fortunately, Bible records of the birth of his four children still remain today; unfortunately there is no clue as to the family of his wife Elizabeth. It is likely that Ide and Elizabeth were married in Harlem about 1723 and that their oldest son was born in Harlem before they moved to Somerset County, New Jersey. The baptismal records of the Raritan Reformed Dutch Church first show Ide and Elizabeth in Somerset County in 1727 for the baptism of their oldest son Abraham, who was two years old by that time.

   The Janeway Account Books give quite a lot of information about Eda Montanie. Eda was a customer of Jacob Janeway's store at Bound Brook between September 1735 and March 1743/44; he had a place at Peapack; he was a brother of Joris/Yost Montanje; he paid a bill for Joseph Montanje in 1745; he was a neighbor of Thomas Harvey, Moses Ayres, Peter Demun Jr. and Sr., Moses Kraige, Francis Lucas, Richard Compton, Hendrick Hover, Jerry Roland, Elias Stillwell, and John Swick. J. Vhan and John Houlsart lived on his place in Peapack in September 1735; Thomas Hankins was living on his place in August 1736.

   In 1753 he appeared on a list of freeholders in Bridgewater Township, Somerset County, New Jersey. He was listed as a customer of Jacob Vosseler's store in Pluckemin between 1768 and 1775, named as Edw. Montanye Sr.

   The will of Edo Montanue [sic] of Bridgewater, Somerset County, N.J., was written on 26 August 1779, shortly after the death of his

   oldest son Abraham, and it was proved on 18 June 1785. Inventory was taken by Jacob Vosseller and John Brocaw on 24 July 1784, the day that Ide Montanye died. The will provides for his wife Elizabeth; his daughter Rebecca, wife of William Lane; his daughter Hannan, wife of Joseph Folkertson; and his son Edward. There are no provisions made for any heirs of Abraham, who was evidently childless. Witnesses were Mary Sebring, Elizabeth Bolmer (afterwards Elizabeth Sexton), and Roelof Sebring. A neighbor, Philip Vanarsdalen, was named joint executor with his son Edward.

   It is not known where Ide is buried nor what happened to his widow Elizabeth, although indications are that she lived on the farm at Pluckemin with her son Edward and his family until her own death.
