About Ellen Clara Engels
biography
From http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stafford-2612
Ellen Stafford was the daughter of Robert T. Stafford, a white plantation owner, and Elizabeth Bernardey, a woman of color, possibly born into slavery. A look at the laws of Georgia at the time needs to be undertaken because she was fully acknowledged by her father (also a white man). Her mother, Marie-Jeanne, was born to free persons of color. Robert Stafford and Elizabeth Bernardey were never married. Ellen was born in Georgia, but due to the advent of the Civil War, her father moved the family to his mother's estate in Connecticut. She received an income from her father's estate although reports at the time claimed that Robert Stafford did not provide for his children. He did provide for his children with Elizabeth, but not the children from another relationship.
Ellen was married twice. Her first husband was Benjamin Brady, an artist. That marriage ended in divorce in 1881. Not long after, Ellen married Frederick Engels, a German immigrant.
Her children from her first marriage took the name of their step-father:
- Florence Stafford Engels
- Frank Wilkerson Engels
Ellen had three children with Frederick:
- Frederick William Engels (1882-1967)
- Charles L. Engels (1887-1955)
- Franciska K. Engels (1887-1888)
She died soon after the birth of her twins and the daughter, Franciska, soon followed the mother.
Ellen died 3 February 1887 in Tanglewood, a section of Rockville Centre, Nassau County (Queens County at the time), New York. Her will was probated 11 March 1887. She left less than $900.00 according to probate records. However, her husband, Frederick, hired a lawyer to look into the income she was receiving. This turned out to be from her father's estate. The remainder was transferred to the children's father for the children and was reported in all the newspapers. It must have been a sensation at the time.
