Norland Nursery Nurse

"Nell also trained as a Norland Nursery Nurse under the foundress of Norland College" (Mrs Emily Jane Ward).

Mrs. Ward based most of her teaching and later work on the philosophy of the eminent German educationalist Friedrich Froebel, setting up suitable training courses for gentle women as children's nurses. She considered that it would be more appropriate for children to be nurtured and tutored from birth by an educated woman versed in such principles as being forbidden to use any form of punishment in the care and discipline of young children.. Mrs Ward strongly disagreed with the Victorian adage that children were miniature defective adults who should be seen and not heard.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Met George Everett when he was on leave in England.

Nell and George resided in Guildford, Surrey.

1963 Death of Nell

"Nell unfortunately died on my 5th birthday which makes it 4th March 1963, and this was at their house called The Chantrees, on Wooler Road in what was then West Hartlepool, later renamed Hartlepool, in the early ‘70s when (Old) Hartlepool & West Hartlepool merged. Her ashes were scattered at Stranton Cemetery. They had moved up from living in Guildford, Surrey, in the mid 50s." (Source: Grandson, John Everett)
