ELLEN SILMAN

The Leeds Jewish community mourns the loss of one its outstanding matriarchal figures in the death of Mrs Ellen Silman, in her 98th year, writes Rabbi Dr S. Brown.

The daughter of Morris Cohen, of Manchester, a well-respected talmudist and founder of the Manchester Talmud Torah, and sister of Israel Cohen, historian and Zionist leader, Mrs Silman brought attributes of learning and Zionism into the Leeds community when she married Morris Silman, whose memory is perpetuated in the Morris Silman Jewish Day School.

She was a lady in both disposition and in the wisdom of her authority, who inspired her family of sons and daughters with similar Jewish loyalties and qualities of leadership for which the Jewish community expresses its gratitude.
