Obituary for Elly Taylor

ROCKPORT - Elly Evensen-Sunde Taylor, 88, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at Windward Gardens following a long illness. Born in Hesó, Norway, June 10, 1916, she was the daughter of Alfred and Clara Bartholdsen Evensen-Sunde. Moving to America in 1925 with her family she settled in Hackensack, New Jersey. She was educated in local schools, graduating from Hackensack High School in 1935. Following high school she attended Englewood Hospital School of Nursing graduating in 1938. She received her certification in public health nursing from Teacher's College at Columbia University in 1939 and worked for the Central Bergen Visiting Nurse Service from 1939 to 1947. During her career in nursing Mrs. Taylor received many citations for outstanding work in the field of public health nursing and was active with Civil Defense. On April 25, 1942 she married Edward H. Taylor in Maywood, New Jersey. The couple made their home in New Jersey. She was active in Cub and Boy Scouts for ten years and a den mother for eight of those years. In 1962 she returned to college to receive her certification in school nursing and became the school nurse at Glen Rock Junior, Senior High School from 1965 to 1976, receiving several citations for her work there. Mrs. Taylor was a charter member of both the Suburban Women's Club; heading up the committee to raise funds for scholarships, and the National School Nurses Association. Retiring in 1976, Mrs. Taylor and her family moved to Cushing, where she was an active member of Broad Cove Church and involved with the Women's Guild there. She was also a life member of the Cushing Historical Society. In 1990 she and her husband moved to Rockland. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Rockport, where she has since resided. Predeceased by her husband in 1995 and a sister, Randi Scrivens in 2004, she is survived by two sons, Edward H. Taylor, Jr. of Warren, James T. Taylor, II of Rockport; her brother Eiven Sunde of Falls Church, VA; two granddaughters, Jessica and Kimberly Taylor of Warren, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. A private, graveside service will be held in Norton Cemetery, Cushing, in the spring.
