OBITUARY - Muscatine Journal, Muscatine, Iowa, Thursday, November 12, 1970:
ELMER L. STAATS WAPELLO - Elmer Lewis Staats, 62, of Wapello, died at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Unit of Burlington Memorial Hospital, Burlington. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Wapello under the direction of the Dudgeon McCulley Funeral Home. Rev. Harris Knox will officiate with burial to be in Harrison cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Born July 21, 1908 in Louisa county, he was a son of Edward and Valley Benson Staats. He married Wanda Lodwick, June 27, 1932 at Rock Island. Mr. Staats had been employed at the Louisa county highway department. Survivors are six sons, William of Burlington, Elmer Jr., Stanley and James of Wapello, Robert of Cedar Rapids and Larry of Muscatine; four daughters, Darlene Longcore and Diane Honts both of Muscatine, Sandra Collins of Wapello and Jackie Staats at home; one brother, Jack, Wapello and one sister, Lela Willits, Muscatine; also 36 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers.

ELMER STAATS RITES HELD Elmer Lewis Staats, 62, of Wapello died Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Memorial Hospital in Burlington. Born July 21, 1908 in Louisa County, he was the son of Edward and Valley Benson Staats. He married Wanda Lodwick, June 27, 1932 at Rock Island, Illinois, who preceded him in death. Survivors are six sons, William of Burlington, Elmer Jr., Stanley and James of Wapello, Robert of Cedar Rapids and Larry of Muscatine; four daughters, Darlene Longcore and Diane Honts both of Muscatine, Sandra Collins of Wapello and Jackie Staats at home; one brother, Jack, Wapello and one sister, Lela Willits, Muscatine; also 36 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Staats was employed by the Louisa County Highway Dept. for many years. Last rites were held Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Harris Knox officiating.
