Õppimist alustas 1943 Tapa keskkoolis, mille lõpetas 1954. Sama aasta septembris astus ta Tallinna Polütehnilise Instituudi keemia-mäeteaduskonda silikaatide tehnoloogia erialale, mille lõpetas 1959 insener-keemik-tehnoloogi kvalifikatsiooniga anorgaaniliste ainete keemilise tehnoloogia alal. 1977 astus E. Tomann TPI mittestatsionaarsesse aspirantuuri, mille lõpetas 1980. Teenistuskäik. 1959. aasta augustist kuni märtsini 1960 töötas E. Tomann TPI polümeeride sünteesi TU laboris vanemlaborandina, seejärel kuni surmani TPI tööstusliku soojusenergeetika teadusliku uurimise laboris teadusliku töötajana. Teaduskraad. Tunnustused. Ühena uurimisgrupi liikmetest omistati E. Tomannile Nõukogude Eesti preemia töö eest Soojuselektrijaamade aurugeneraatorite küttepindade korrosioonerosioonse kulumise analüüs ja arvutus. Kandidaadiväitekiri – Katlateraste kõrgtemperatuurse korrosiooni kineetika Eesti põlevkivi ja Nazarovo söe põlemisproduktides, TPI, 1981.

Tomann’s scientific activities were connected with research into boiler steel corrosion and depreciation. She became one of the laboratory’s leading specialists in this area, successfully participating in many research undertakings of union-wide importance. That work was primarily connected with determining the corrosive activity level in the Estonian oil shale, the Siberian brown coal and the Bulgarian and Yugoslavian lignites. She was the author of many scientific publications and delivered reports at representative scientific conferences in the Soviet Union and other countries. In addition to the published articles, she was a co-author of two union-wide manuals. Acknowledgements. E. Tomann, one among several members of the research team, received a Soviet Estonian award for the work titled “Analysis and calculation of corrosive-erosive depreciation of heating surfaces in steam generators of thermal power plants”.
