Elvira (my paternal great-great grandmother) was a daughter of Hugh and Ann Smith and was born about 1838 in TN (either Smith or Jackson County). She had 6 known siblings: Nancy (b. circa 1830), Isam (b. circa 1836), Permelia (b. circa 1841), brother Byrd (b. 1844), Mary E. (b. circa 1845), and Visa (b. circa 1849).
Elvira married Harmon Alcorn on June 7, 1856 in DeKalb Co., TN and they moved to Washington Co., MO before the birth of my paternal great-grandfather, Lafayette, on July 31, 1858.
Elvira and Harmon were among the first settlers to co-found the Emmaus Missionary Baptist Church in Courtois, Washington Co., MO on February 11, 1861. I visited this church and took photos of it and the cemetery on the church grounds where Harmon and Elvira are buried.
Elvira's obituary was published in the 1-2-1890 edition of the Iron County Missouri Register and stated:
"Mrs. Harmon Alcorn died about the time of my last writing. Her remains were interred in the cemetery at Emmaus Church."* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 4 2021, 15:36:57 UTC
