About Elza Hedge Rogers
Elzey was named after a clerk in the courts of Richland Co., Ohio where he was born. It is possible Elza Hedge had married a sister of John Rogers. Elza and Nancy Rogers had three children. Two died at a very young age. Elza was identified with the successful farmers of Western Ohio for many years. He served as a school director and Supervisor. He married Nancy's step-sister Lucy Morris later, and between his marriage to Nancy and to Lucy married Maria Baker with whom he had two children that died.
W. L. Rogers noted that Elza lived one mile north of St. Johns on the east side of the Lima Road and north of the Middle Pike. He noted that "Elzey was a kind, gentle, lovable man who never injured anyone and who talked but little, but lived a Christian life every day. People knew him by his works, not his words. A perfect example of an upright man."
Lucy and Elza Rogers raised Benjamin_Dudley_Van_Tressfrom infancy. There is no known genetic relationship.
Dudley was an earnest student who became well educated. He was one of the first school teachers in the St. Johns area.
