About Emeline Archer Harshey

She was the daughter of Daniel and Nancy (Cree) Hupp. Her name appears on some records as Emeline and as Emaline on others. In the Civil War minors application she signed a document with an "x" indicating that she couldn't write. Perhaps she didn't even know the spelling of her own name. She married Henry Archer on 23 May 1854, Noble Co., Ohio. They were the parents of five children: Eliza Jane Lanam, Margaret E. McLary; Mary Agnes Fleener; Rebecca McCoy; Hannah Sisson.

Residence per Census: Enoch, Noble Co., Ohio in 1860. It is likely that her children with Henry were born in Noble Co.

71st Ohio Volunteer Infantry - Company A history and widow's application show that he was a Private who was drafted Sept. 28, 1864, age 23. His service was for one year and he died Feb. 11, 1865 at a Union Army hospital in Nashville, TN of smallpox he contracted while in service.

Emeline is listed on the widow's Application No. 96971 on June 8, 1865, Certificate No. 60198. Another Application No. 165157 on Sept 12, 1869, Certificate No. 121558.

Emeline remarried on Feb. 6, 1868, Washington Co., Ohio to William W. Harshey. A daughter, Victoria Harshey, was born Dec. 24, 1869 in Washington Co., Ohio per birth records. They are found on the 1870 Census living at Marietta, Washington Co., Ohio. Around 1875 William Harshey, Emeline and the Archer daughters migrated to Brown Co., Indiana.

William Wesley Harshey remarried on March 16, 1880 in Morgan Co., IN to Mary Roseanna Outland. William was also a Civil War veteran. William's Civil War pension application may reveal even more information about this family.

Emeline apparently died before March, 1880, likely circa 1879. No stone has been found for her.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Dec 20 2020, 18:33:33 UTC
