About Emilia Matilda Carlson

The 1920 and 1930 census shows Broer and Matilda (Tillie) living at 4521 Liberty, Kansas City Missouri. On Matilda's son Carl's death certificate her maiden name is listed as Tornquist. It is assumed this is a name she used after she entered the US. The other known family members that used Tornquist/Tornkvist was Matiltda's brother Karl Alfred used the name in Sweden and Emil used Tornquist in Canada. The explaination for use of the name was to perhaps differentiate himself from other Karl Alfred Karlssons which was a very common name in Sweden. It is unclear at this time why Emil and Tillie used Turnquist or Tornquist. Karl used the name Carlson which would have been in keeping the the swedish patrimonic names. Ellen used Johnson, her father's last name and the name traditionally used by Swedes immigrating to the US.

IMMIGRATION: Tillie left Gotenberg Sweden by ship on September 20, 1905 and traveled to Liverpool England. She boarded the SS Lucania and left England on September 23, 1905. Tillie entered the US on 30 September 1905 thru Ellis Island. She entered the country as Emilia M Jonsson age 20. Her traveling companion was her brother Johan Emil (Emil). Their destination was their Uncle and Aunt, Frank and Louisa Forsberg in Kansas City, Kansas. In addition to Emil and Tillie, there were 2 other girls traveling with them. Anna and Hulda Anderson, both 24 were also headed to Uncle Frank Forsberg's home in Kansas City. It is assumed the girls are cousins to Emil, Tillie and Ellen, but the relationship is uncertain at this time. Matilda and Emil each paid their own way and each had $20.00 in cash. On entering the country the ship manifest states that Mathilda had a case of conjuctivitis.
