Emily was the daughter of William and Isibella Simmons. The family ran the hotel at Bow NSW, where Ambrose met Emily. The hotel was a stopover for teamsters.

Emily was baptised by Father Ryan on 28th June 1877.

Emily and Ambrose were married in a ceremony at St Anne's Roman Catholic Church at Merriwa conducted by Father W E O'Reilly on 8th February 1899.
